My Minimalist Glamping Essentials: The Gear We Actually Use and Love

When we planned our first glamping trip, I spent weeks reading reviews, watching YouTube videos, and comparing products. I quickly realized there were hundreds of “must-have” camping gadgets, many of which looked useful but would probably sit in our garage after one trip.

As a minimalist mom, I don’t like buying lots of equipment for something we do only once or twice a year. I wanted products that were practical, durable, easy to store, and reasonably priced.

Every item in this guide is something we personally purchased after researching several options. These are not sponsored products, and none of the links are affiliate links. I’m simply sharing what worked well for our family in case it helps you prepare for your own glamping adventure.

If you’re just getting started, don’t feel like you need to buy everything at once. Begin with the basics, see what your family actually uses, and slowly build your collection over time.

Our Philosophy: Buy Less, Buy Better

Instead of purchasing dozens of inexpensive camping gadgets, we focused on buying a few quality items that make every trip easier.

When deciding whether to purchase something, I ask myself:

  • Will we actually use this on every trip?
  • Is it easy to store at home?
  • Does it make camping significantly easier?
  • Is it good value for the money?

If the answer isn’t yes to all four, we usually skip it.

That approach has helped us keep our camping gear organized without filling our garage with things we rarely use.

Summer camping can get surprisingly warm, especially inside a tent during the afternoon or on calm nights. A portable camping fan has become one of those items we never leave behind. It keeps the tent comfortable and helps everyone sleep better after a long day of hiking.

We use it while relaxing inside the tent, during afternoon breaks, and even while cooking at the campsite. The built-in LED light is an added bonus for reading, finding gear after dark, or getting the kids ready for bed without needing a separate lantern.

This is one of those camping items that ends up being used far more than we expected. We originally bought it for camping, but now it comes with us on almost every outdoor adventure, including national parks, picnics, beach trips, outdoor concerts, and kids’ sporting events.

We spread it outside our tent so the kids have a clean place to play, use it under our picnic table during lunch, and lay it out at scenic overlooks when we stop for a quick snack. It also works great for relaxing around the campfire without sitting directly on the ground.

The waterproof backing keeps moisture from soaking through when the ground is damp, and after the trip it simply rolls up with its carrying strap for easy storage in our camping gear bin. Thermacell Portable Mosquito Repeller

Mosquitoes are my biggest nightmare while camping. If we’re camping near a lake, in the woods, or on a hiking trail, they always seem to find us. Instead of enjoying the outdoors, we end up constantly swatting bugs away.

After trying sprays and bug lotions, we found that a portable mosquito repeller made a huge difference around our campsite. We turn it on while preparing dinner, sitting around the campfire, or relaxing outside the tent, and it creates a much more comfortable space for the whole family.

We still carry insect repellent for hiking, but this has become our go-to solution whenever we’re spending time at the campsite.

We usually place it on our picnic table or hang it near our chairs. Besides creating a cozy atmosphere, the citronella scent helps make evenings outdoors more comfortable when mosquitoes start showing up.

Sawyer Premium Permethrin Clothing & Gear Spray
Our Secret Weapon Against Bugs

Sawyer Premium Permethrin Clothing & Gear Spray

If there’s one camping product that experienced parents consistently recommend, it’s permethrin spray. After hearing about it from many seasoned campers, we decided to give it a try, and now it’s part of our camping checklist for every trip into the woods.

Instead of spraying it on your skin, you apply it to your clothing, shoes, socks, backpacks, camping chairs, and even your tent before the trip. Once it dries, it’s odorless and continues protecting your gear for weeks. It helps repel or kill ticks, mosquitoes, ants, chiggers, and many other biting insects.

When we’re camping in wooded areas or hiking on overgrown trails, having treated clothing gives us extra peace of mind, especially with young kids who love exploring every corner of the campsite.

Why We Love It

  • Helps protect against ticks, mosquitoes, ants, chiggers, and other insects
  • Applied to clothing and gear instead of directly on your skin
  • Excellent for camping, hiking, and backpacking
  • Odorless after it dries

This isn’t something most people think about when planning a camping trip, but once you’ve used one, it’s hard to travel without it. Campground restrooms, rest stops, and public facilities don’t always provide the level of cleanliness we’re used to at home.

We keep this portable bidet in our camping toiletry bag. Just fill it with clean water before heading to the restroom, and it provides a much more comfortable and refreshing clean than toilet paper alone.

  • Serving spoons
  • Can opener
  • Paper towels

Camping First Aid Kit

We always keep a dedicated camping first aid kit packed and ready. Fortunately, we’ve rarely needed it, but it’s reassuring to have. Our kit includes:

  • Bandages
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Children’s pain medicine
  • Tweezers

We carry a simple cleaning kit that includes:

  • Sponge
  • Trash bags
  • Cleaning wipes
  • Microfiber towels

Because everything stays packed together, we never forget important items.

Everything Fits in One Bin

One thing I love most about our setup is that nearly everything fits inside our camping storage bin.

When it’s time for our next trip, packing takes less than an hour because most supplies are already organized.

Instead of searching the garage for dozens of items, we simply load one gear bin, our cooler, packing cubes, and a few personal bags.

That simple system has made glamping much more enjoyable.

What We Didn’t Buy

One thing I learned while researching camping gear is that you don’t need every gadget advertised online.

We skipped:

  • Expensive camping coffee makers
  • Large cooking stations
  • Multiple lanterns
  • Heavy cast iron cookware
  • Large camping cabinets
  • Fancy storage systems

For families who only camp occasionally, simpler really is better.

Final Thoughts

Building your first glamping kit doesn’t have to happen all at once.

Start with a few essentials, take your first trip, and make notes about what you actually used. You may discover that some items you thought were necessary stayed packed the entire weekend, while a simple lantern or storage bin became indispensable.

For our family, choosing fewer but better-quality items has made every glamping trip easier to pack, easier to organize, and much more relaxing.

In the next part of this series, I am adding our favorite vegetarian camp meals, cooler packing tips, campfire recipes, firewood recommendations, fun activities for kids, and the best glamping destinations near the Bay Area.
